Thy Name, Part 1

Thy Name –  (Matt 6:9)

Ok – I am thinking at least 3 parts, or these blogs will be so long no one will ever read them.

"How Great is our God" by Chris Tomlin

Let me start with this Philippians 2:9-11

For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus – that is the name that is above every name.

And again in Ephesians 1:20-21

…which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

So here is the thing that struck me last week as I was pondering the Philippians passage. If God gave Jesus a name above ALL names, is it actually above all the other names of God? Like Yahweh, or Jehovah, or Adonai, or El Shaddai, or all those other names we sing?

Well – yes – that is what it says, and if you weren’t sure, you could check in Ephesians 1 and find that it is above every name in the age to come. I do see that Jesus Himself is still in subjection to the Father as it states in 1 Corinthians 15:27, but there is "something about that name."

I hear Christians get all excited when someone in a secular contexts talks about God (like an athlete or politician or some other celeb.) But the word god is pretty ambiguous. But when you say Jesus – now you have drawn a line in the sand. Your talking about the one who said – I am THE Way, (not A way,) THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life, No one come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 - emphasis is mine)

So it is the name of Jesus that sets Christianity apart from every other religion. [Tweet This] Many people in the world believe in God, but only those who name the name of Jesus are part of His kingdom.

So if there is a name that must be hallowed it is the Name above all names – Jesus.

BenThanks for reading today. Come back tomorrow and we will look at the way God reveals himself to us by His Name.
