Caddo’s Seven Word Sundays – AKA – Sunday Afternoon Musing

Caddo's Seven Word Sunday

Jesus Endured the Despicable Toward Joyful Ends

…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2 NASB)

Time and again I revisit this verse, and each time something else calls out to me.

Today, during our time of worship, bundled up with no lights and a couple extension cords from next door bringing enough power to run a few small amps and a projector, we read this verse.

What jumped out at me today was that there were things in Jesus’ life that He despised, and things in His life that He endured.

We seem to think that the Spirit filled life will consist solely of joy unspeakable.

Yet Jesus, in order to reach joy unspeakable, and because of the value He place on joy unspeakable, endured the despicable!

The scripture is clear that He bore, and endured for us, yet the question in my spirit is this: If I am to love like Jesus loved, are there despicable things I must endure in order to bring others into His wonderful light?

Jesus made it plain that the same world that despised Him would despise us as well. Perhaps this is the savor of death we looked at yesterday as we are poured forth.

This is what I am pondering today – join me if you care to – add your ponderings below if you like.

Thanks for stopping in.

Hi Ben! Excellent word for us. It's true that, for me, the JOY-thing isn't exactly 24/7--but it does override that which I must endure. God bless you and the fam--love, sis Caddo

Thank you for talking about joy . .. and the despicable that must be endured. Could He and we still have that joy, even while enduring the despicable? I just was reading and thinking about fullness of joy in His presence. . .so thinking out loud here!
God bless you and yours as you endure the cold and no lights, to still gather and worship today!

this reminds me of a hymn I love so much, the chorus of which says,

    Turn your eyes upon Jesus!
Look full in His wonderful face!
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace!

... again and again, we need to turn our eyes away from anything else and unto Jesus! Look at what He has done, what He accomplished, what He is.... - and all other things will fade away, in the light of His glory and grace....
