He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three pecks of meal, until it was all leavened.” (Matthew 13:33 NASB)
Leaven is fascinating stuff.
I love to bake bread. It never ceases to amaze me when I sit a bowl of dough perhaps 6 cups of flowers worth with a couple teaspoons of yeast incorporated (that is a ratio of about 72 to 1) and come back an hour later I have twice as much dough as when I started.
So let’s do an experiment.
Let’s take 6 cups of whole grain wheat – shelled, but not crushed. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons on Yeast in the bowl. What do you expect would happen?
Nothing at all.
First you must grind the wheat, mill it into fine powder.
Now you can mix them in the proper proportions and you will find that the tiny amount of leaven or yeast will completely infiltrate the dough will burst its seams.
I want to suggest to you today that the loaf in question here is the heart of man. The leaven of the Gospel can have no effect on a heart in its raw form. The heart must be broken by the law.
At the turn of the 18th century, the great Bible commentator Matthew Henry wrote:
The law grinds the heart, and then the gospel leavens it.
Notice also that the leaven is hidden. God’s word must be hidden in the hearts of men, not for secrecy, but for security.
David says in that wonderful Psalm 119
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You! (Psalm 119:11 NKJV)
Soon, as you hide God’s word in your heart, you will find that it changes you completely. The life of the leaven breathes the breath of life into your whole being. [Tweet This]
