Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. (John 4:20 NASB)
Today we get an evangelism lesson from the Master Evangelist – or should I say from Mr. Evangel Himself. (Evangel = Good News)
We have been looking at a dialogue between a woman of Samaria and Jesus. Jesus has been leading her from the natural of retrieving water from a well, to the spiritual of a river of living water.
Then the Spirit put in Jesus heart the place in her life that most needed a touch.
This first penetrating poke of the Holy Spirit caused her natural defenses to go up, and she went with an argument that was no doubt common for the Samaritans of the day.
We worship here in the mountains, but YOU PEOPLE require worship way down in Jerusalem.
It is as if she is saying “WOOO there Mr. Jesus – that is just a little too personal. My broken life is my business.”
I am going to hit the ejector button on this conversation and take it to where we can easily DISAGREE. This is a classic tactic. It has happened to me dozens of times. I will try to lead a conversation to the Lord, and as soon as the person I am talking to sees this trajectory, they dredge up something that will break any connection we have established.
Let’s make this a WE vs. YOU conversation.
I have to be honest with you – the mouthpieces for Christianity in the public square these days make this so easy. There are so many places where they have drawn lines and made division a simple matter of “You People say.”
I love that Jesus does not let this derail Him. He even answers her question! (Somewhat rare for Jesus – someday I will have to do a study on when He does and when He does not.)
Here is the tip for the day.
Don’t get derailed when people throw up road blocks. When you see this happening realize that the Holy Spirit has placed His finger on something that hurts. He only does that when He is in a healing mood (OK – that makes it sound like sometimes He is not in a healing mood – it is just an expression – He is Healer!)
Let me put it this way. When you have by the Spirit of God touched a wound, it means that God is ready to heal right then and there (or at least start the process right then and there) so don’t run away.
Send up the Holy Spirit antenna (you have one of those right?) and listen for the next place to take the conversation. [Tweet This]
And as we will see in the next couple days it might surprise you where He goes.
Are you willing to take a chance with those around you today? God can touch them – and perhaps today you are the finger of God.
See you again soon
