A Handsome Lover – SoS Saturday

How handsome you are, my beloved, And so pleasant! Indeed, our couch is luxuriant! (Song of Songs 1:16 NASB)

She has been gazing on Jesus – eyes (dove’s eyes) fixed on His wonderful face, and it’s growing on her.

In this first chapter of this wonderful song, she has come from a distant admirer with a crush on this seemingly unattainable man – the Shepherd King – to a place now where they have found one another, and are in love.

As she gazes on Him, and hears His love declared to her, His beauty in her eyes grows, and fills her every thought.

What is it that is so handsome about Jesus?

Isaiah prophesies that He will not be physically attractive:

For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. (Isaiah 53:2 NASB)

So what is His great draw? His holiness.

Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth. (Psalm 96:9 NKJV)

There is a beauty to holiness that is not immediately evident. As you behold, gaze on, and ponder the wonderful holiness of the Lord, that which the world despises begins to grow in beauty, until we join in with the words of Keith Green “Oh Lord, You’re beautiful, Your face is all I seek.”

As we draw near to Him and He to us, we come under His correction – sometimes with out a word spoken, and His correction is for one purpose “…that we may be partakers of His holiness.” (Hebrews 12:10 NKJV)

This is our process of transformation. It comes in drawing closer to the Lord and letting Him have access to and reign over more and more of our lives.

Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: (Hebrews 12:14 NKJV)

BenLet’s press into that holiness today.

See you next week.

He is my spiritual Childhood. The man who led me to the Lord and discipled me tells stories of going to a Bible study where Keith led worship and Leonard Ravenhill taught from the Word.

You know, brother, it's always intrigued me,"what makes a person beautiful/handsome/attractive?" Yes of course, with Jesus, it's His holiness--and He's approachable, and His love in inclusive--not judgmental; and he loved a party--he was fun, as well as serious about His Father's business. I've discovered in the last year or so that folks (our blog neighborhood, and the few contacts I have in the "real") are attracted to the JESUS Joy in me (not my physical appearance). I couldn't be more thrilled; it's a long way from the days when I spent 2 hrs each morning "getting beautiful", in hopes of a second glance/smile/ride into the sunset.

By the way, Ben--I whipped out a "nonet" (poetry form) about the Samaritan Woman. It's not Pulitzer-worthy, but I'll likely post it so you can have a look-see. God bless you and the fam--love, sis Caddo (Are ya excited for Easter?!!!)

You have done a great job of describing some more of the beauty of Jesus I am pretty sure we are only scratching the surface here - a little later in the song she uses the word Dazzling/Radiant - i just love that.

I can't wait to read your 'nonet' I am always amazed at all the forms of poetry you pull out of your English Major trunk. I am so impressed.

I am so psyched about Easter. Best day of the YEAR! He is Risen (oh drat, i gave it away)
      Love you

Thank you , Mr. Ben, for sharing this with us today. The words to that Keith Green song really got to me. It's been too long since I've heard that , sang it , prayed it. God bless you as you seek Him today, drawn to His holiness!
