Got Longings?

Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. ~ Matthew 7:7 NASB

I was seeking just this morning. I lost track of some keys that are very important, and would be embarrassing if I had to ask for them to be replaced.

My search today was really pretty trivial (I did ask the Lord for help, and He did lead me to my keys – thank you Jesus)

What do you seek? (Really seek)

I have talked before about the longings built in to each of our souls. The God given desires that are intended to draw us to who we were made to be.

Satisfy Your Deepest Longings!Mike Bickle and Deborah Hiebert have published a book called “The Seven Longings of the Human Heart” – available [HERE] which I think captures what we all seek, even if we don’t realize it.

Here is Mike Bickle’s list of longings

  • A longing to be fascinated
  • A longing to possess and feel beautiful
  • A longing to be great and successful
  • A longing to know intimacy without shame
  • A longing for assurance of being enjoyed
  • A longing to be wholehearted and passionate
  • A longing to make deep and lasting impact

Can you add to this short list?

The big deal though, is not so much what we seek, but where we search. When we fulfill these longings at the worlds well, our lives will get out of balance.

Then a strange thing happens. Because we have followed our God given longings to an ungodly end, we begin to repent for the longing itself. But these longings are built in, and part of your nature – even your new nature.

You can’t repent them away, and when you suppress them, you will miss much of what the Lord has given you to accomplish, and enjoy.

So don’t abandon your hopes, focus your search.

ASK for help in the search and God will shine a light on the path you can follow to satisfy your deepest longing.

Remember back at the very beginning of this Kingdom tutorial (the Sermon on the Mount) we read:

Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied! ~ Matthew 5:6 AMP

I love the way the Amplified Bible describes blessed.

BenThanks for coming by today.

See you again soon.

Ben

Many years ago, in Kansas City, I heard Mike teach that God placed three passions in our spirits: (1) Passion for acceptance; (2) Passion for significance; and (3) Passion to be wholehearted and committed. I can see how the list grew to seven from the three. Thanks for reminding me.

Oh this is WAY good, Ben--and I have more than 2 cents today. First, I meant to tell you how much I like the door knocker pic--very dramatic, powerful, almost regal looking (if it were a lion). The book of Longings sounds very interesting, I'll put it on my list! (3,4,5 & 7 echoed for me; 1 & 6, I've got in spades) Everything else in today's lesson was good--it's too bad some of us (me) take so long to learn that the world, where we often look first, cannot supply what we need and yearn for--but Jesus has it All in His well-stocked warehouse, and we can go there everyday and fill up our baskets for Free!!! Such a deal! And finally, I love the Amplified too--thanks for highlighting the word "fortunate" for me, as I've been avoiding using it in my poems/prose, thinking it was unGodly--but if it's in a Bible, I'm safe--whew! Oh, it's a beautiful day in the Lord's neighborhood! (I guess I spent a nickel, eh?) God bless you BIG--sis Jael-caddo

I don't know if you ever checked out the blog i highlighted at the bottom -the 3 A's of blessing - it is the 2nd blog i ever posted, but it is all about that word Blessed and it is still one of the most wonderful truths i have come across. You might check it out (and get your 5 cents worth)
Bless you right back - Ben

It's a light bulb moment that we tend to repent of our longings when we follow them to an ungodly end when the longings themselves are God given. It's like missing the forest for the trees. Great post, Ben. Thought provoking, as usual.

This is good stuff Ben. I do wonder if maybe I have put some godly longings on the shelf because I once sought them out through sinful means . I have to take that one to my prayer closet.

That third one always gets me - when i feel longings to be great, it want to press them down - feels like pride, and then i hear Jesus says - if you want to be great ... - like he knows it's in my heart, and there is a right way to do it.
