Unexpected Influence

Jesus Heals a Leper

Jesus, having healed – cleansed – this leprous man, then asks him to keep it quiet. The Bible does not tell us why Jesus wanted Him to keep quiet, though it infers it had to do with the crowds. Jesus’ influence has been building, and building fast.

Perhaps He was interested in the man fulfilling the requirements of the law, by going to the priest and making the offering required by the law. Perhaps it was actually a crowd control move by Jesus.

Here’s the account:

And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, and He said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.” But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news about, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere. ~ Mark 1:43-45

What happens when Jesus touches you?

Our leprous friend was touched – changed – so deeply and so completely, that there was no way for Him to keep silent. Even with Jesus telling him in no uncertain terms to keep quiet, he is telling everyone.

Now we have a new commandment – commission – “go and preach.”

Jesus has not told you to keep quiet – quite the contrary – “as you go, preach,” “as you go, teach.

The leper was clean, and wanted to tell everyone.

Jesus said to this leper, "Don't tell anyone," but to the man in Mark 5 delivered of 2000 demons, He told him to tell everyone. Why? Like you, my best guess is that it concerned the fulfillment of the Law.

What has Jesus done for me? He kept me from committing suicide. So, I'm alive because He's alive.

Love so amazing to save us when we feel so worthless. He spends the greatest price to buy that which we so lowly esteem - what a wonderful Savior!

So glad He saved you bro.

Years and years ago, I had the misfortune of meeting a rural (and dour) preacher who focused on the "disobedience" of this healed/cleansed leper who couldn't help but tell everyone. My question, "Why?" was greeted with rebuke (in front of the small group), rather than any attempt to illuminate. (If the Lord tells you something, you don't ask Why, you'd best just do it!) It does give me pause, to read that Jesus "sternly" warned him....

2 years ago, when Jesus stepped in and turned everything in my life right side up, I couldn't keep quiet about it either (and He didn't ask me to). Recently, though I've been in a rather slippery season emotionally, I'm believing He will give me a way to gloriously/victoriously share about it--as you told me in March, "Jesus still heals, and we still struggle". There's nothing negative about that to feel ashamed of, and the greatest Bible folks had their less-than-spectacular times--God didn't love them any less, nor stop using them, so that's what I'm focusing on (His grace).

By the way, I had thunk up a question for Fri Q/A, but it has slipped away--if it flies back into my head, I'll make a note. God bless you and the fam--love, Cj

I am so glad He has not put me in a cone of silence! There is so much to tell, about the mountains and the vallies. I love what you say here about God not loving us less because we are going through struggles. I am so thankful we have grace! YAY
      God bless you sis.

I dare say that, aside from the duct tape, I'd be hard pressed to keep silent about how Good HE is to me! How amused He must be, watching me squirm in my seat, hand waving wildly to tell "one more thing".

As I read Mr. Ben's post, I was thinking of you, Sis! You cannot contain yourself when He says tell and do so so joyfully that everyone is moved closer to Him!!
Thank you, Mr. Ben and God bless you too!
p.s. If CJ comes back here, maybe she could help me with a question she and I were tossing around, about God's promises. When He has made a promise to a person or people, are we out of line to claim it for ourselves? Is this the question you were thinking of, Sis?

I heard someone preach that if he had gone and shown himself to the priests -- it would have been evidence to the priests that Jesus healed him.
    Great insights as usual Ben.
