Hey, it’s another Red Letter Day, and the words of Jesus are jumping off the page (as they are want to do.)
Check out what Jesus says in John 14:
…that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. ~ John 14:17
A few things strike me as I ponder this passage. Notice:
The world cannot receive the Spirit of Truth.
This is a strong phrase. It states that it is difficult, even impossible, as it stands, for the world to receive the Spirit of Truth.
This is striking since just up the page Jesus identifies Himself as “the Truth.”
This defines the world and its plight pretty well.
We can reverse engineer the world by turning this statement around. The ‘world’ as Jesus calls it are those that do not ‘look’ at the Spirit of Truth. Or a better way to put it might be that they close their eyes to truth.
This word ‘look’ is interesting. The NASB that is installed on my computer uses the word ‘behold’ which is what got me going in the first place. Thayer’s says that it was used for officials who would watch games or sacrifices in an official capacity. If you have ever seen them announce the lotto numbers, they way something like, this drawing was observed by … indicating that someone was scrutinizing every motion to ensure all was well.
So we are not talking here about something that catches the corner of your eye and you get a quick glance to see what you saw.
We are talking about a gaze, an observation, a close examination of the Spirit, and of Truth.
let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, ~ Hebrews 12:1-2
I love that phrase ‘fix our eyes on Jesus’ and that really is the trick to it all.
Today fix your eyes on Jesus, behold Him, take a good long look. It may be hard to ‘look’ at a Spirit of Truth, but we know that Jesus is the express image of the Father, and the Spirit is dwelling in those of us who are ‘not of this world’ is there to bring Jesus to mind, to helps us keep our eyes on the Spirit of Truth.
Lord, will you help us see Jesus today? [Tweet This]
See you again soon.
Hey, if these ponderings draw you closer to Jesus, share them with your friends. It would be a big help to me as I try to reach folks with the Spirit of Truth. A like on Facebook, or a Tweet can make a difference. – Thanks
