Water, Water Everywhere [Fountains] ~ SoS Saturday

Many Waters - SoS header

A garden enclosed
Is my sister, my spouse,
A spring shut up,
A fountain sealed.
...
A fountain of gardens,
A well of living waters,
And streams from Lebanon.

Song of Songs 4:12, 15 NKJV

Last week we began to look at these four water metaphors used by Solomon in these two lines from the song with a look at the spring. Today let’s talk fountains.

A Fountain Sealed

Sausalito Fountain

In my mind a fountain is where water sprays and splashes, bubbles and flows. When He calls her a fountain, He is speaking of the effervescence of her life, the way her joy explodes with celebration in His presence.

You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

Psalms 16:11

Again, the fountain is sealed. His presence is what draws this joy out of her. When she gets around Him she is full of joy. She is a fountain, pure and clean, and set apart for only Him, and He is aware and sees that she only has eyes for Him.

As we look at the way the word fountain is used in scripture there are a couple I would like to draw to the front here.

First, in Proverbs, Solomon weaves a fountain into a number of verses where he refers to “a fountain of life.”

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, - Proverbs 10:11
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, - Proverbs 13:14
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, - Proverbs 14:27
Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, - Proverbs 16:22

Each of these is pointing to one particular Word who is the fountain of life. The Word who was made flesh, and literally became the fountain of life that Zechariah prophesied:

"In that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity. - Zechariah 13:1

I love this old William Cowper poem/hymn.

There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood

There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.
Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.

Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.
Be saved, to sin no more, be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.

E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy power to save,
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
Lies silent in the grave, lies silent in the grave;
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.

Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared, unworthy though I be,
For me a blood bought free reward, a golden harp for me!
’Tis strung and tuned for endless years, and formed by power divine,
To sound in God the Father’s ears no other name but Thine.

On one hand we are a sealed fountain, bubbling joy and live in His presence and for His pleasure. As He sends us out we become to those around us what He is to the world.

As Jesus is a fountain of life to us, so we become a fountain of life to those around us. We bubble with joy and speak words of life into the world in which God has placed us. As we lay down our lives for those we rub shoulders with we become a fountain of life flowing with living water, the living water, flowing from that one eternal spring that in which we abide.

Lord, today I pray that I would be a refreshing fountain to you, and a fountain of life to those I come in contact with.

Ben NelsonCome back next week as we take on the deep subject of wells.

Until then, FLOW!

Ben
