Jesus’ One Thing

one thing

For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working." - John 5:16-17 NASB

There are times when Jesus sets out an argument for healing or helping folks on the Sabbath day, but here in John 5 His answer is different, and striking.

Jesus basically tells those around Him that He is not checking His calendar to see if His actions are appropriate, He is listening to and looking at the Father.

To put it plainly, He answers them:

I know that everything you do is dictated by the calendar. You go from Sabbath to Sabbath, from Feast to Fast and back again to Feast.

But I determine the day's activities – teaching schedule and materials, healing ministry agenda, food multiplication and storm suppression – in My time with the Father.

Time with the Father, or perhaps I should say connection with the Father was Jesus’ 'ONE THING every day. I have ONLY come to do the will of Him who sent me.

Time for me to adopt that 'ONE THING’ as my 'ONE THING.'

How ‘bout you?

Ben

Exactly where this came from today - i was stressing about what to do first and all I had to do, and then i read that Jesus was not moved by these things. Thanks Pastor J.

It seems like if I take the time for Jesus I usually never miss taking that time from my schedule because my whole day seems to run smoother once I have done that. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

I love this Mr. Ben! "Jesus's connection with the Father was His One Thing." . ..well, that keeps it pretty simple! Thanks so much and God bless ya!

As I listen through John over and over, I just keep hearing Jesus say it every time He is questioned - I am only doing what pleases My Father. It is a beautiful plan.
