How To: Turn a Blessing into a Curse.

OK - this may not be your normal “How To” blog.

In John 6 Jesus sees the crowd and feeds them - if you only counted the men there were 5,000.

When John records Jesus’ miracles he does not call them miracles, but signs. A sign has a purpose. For the most part, a sign leads you or warns you or makes an announcement.

Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. - John 6:11 ESV

The tail end of this verse caught my attention this morning, “as much as they wanted.”

When I sit at the table and I am served, and can eat as much as I want - it seems a blessing to me.

These who have received this blessing follow Him.

I see emails and blog posts and tweets every day on how to get more followers. It’s apparently a big deal.

Jesus runs up His follower count by the thousands, and it didn’t cost Him a thing.

They show up the next day across the Sea of Galilee. They track Jesus down, and get as close as they can to see what He’s going to do next. Perhaps their hoping to see a miracle. Perhaps they are hungry for another meal.

But today - no signs - no miracles - no “blessings” - other than one of the greatest revelations of all time - “I am the bread of life.”

That is the blessing that turns yesterday’s bread and fish into a curse - an offense.

“Jesus - I am fine with you as long as you meet my needs - fill my belly - heal my body - fill my wallet.”

But you want me to turn my back on my cozy religion - leave every security that I know - rebel against my own fear of man - and follow You - trust You - embrace Your word - put You first.

When the Father touches us, when He shows His hand of blessing, there is, along with the blessing in the moment, a call to abandon ourselves to Him. A call to eat His flesh and drink His blood. A call to lay down our lives with Him - reckon ourselves dead to everything in us and reckon ourselves alive to everything in Him.

The good news is - for those who follow on from this point (12 out of 5,000+) there is a New Covenant in that blood - there is life in that blood. There is friendship with God on the other side of that offense.

When we push through the strong words of Christ and embrace Him for who He is - we find true freedom, freedom to be all that He created us to be.

But if His Word offends you - you like 4,988+ folks will walk away without Christ.

Christ in you - it’s your only hope - my only hope.

Will you eat His flesh? (He is the Word made flesh.)

Will you drink His blood? (His blood is the only way to life.)

Ben NelsonThanks for stopping by today.

Walk in the light.

And when we take the hard words of Christ to heart we begin to walk and apply the crucified life. The flesh stands against it. The world mocks it. Satan hates it and wars against it. But therein is relay power to live and prosper in ways this old world never thinks of. A good word Ben!
