Behold the Man

So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!" - John 19:5 ESV

It’s Friday morning. Hours have past since Peter denied Him. He stands alone.

Alone before the court of Rome.
Alone before the Jewish Leaders.
Alone before the puppet King Herod.
Alone before an angry mob.

Pilate's words ring out:

Behold the man!

It echoes back to the words of John the Baptist.

Behold the Lamb!

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! - John 1:29 ESV

John saw it long before anyone else.

This man would be the Lamb promised by Abraham to Isaac on the mountain of offering.

Abraham said, "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went both of them together. - Genesis 22:8 ESV

Here stands the Lamb of God, willingly giving His life. Those who would take it have no idea what they are accepting—what manner of gift they are receiving on behalf of all mankind.

Behold the man!

There would be a day—not many days hence—when this lamb would stand before the Majesty of the Father—the throne of God—and present His blood, a worthy sacrifice for sin. There He would be introduced in similar fashion.

Behold the lion of the tribe of Judah

And one of the elders said to me, "Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals." And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. - Revelation 5:5-6 ESV

But on this Friday, Pilate would finally present Him one last time.

Behold your King!

Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" - John 19:5, 14 ESV

As we walk through this day of commemoration, let us keep our eyes on Jesus.

Behold the Man!
Behold the Lamb!
Behold the Lion!

Behold your King!
