The Glory of a Nation

My four kids a few years back.
My four kids a few years back.

This verse stepped off my monitor and into my heart this morning.

As for Ephraim, their glory will fly away like a bird--No birth, no pregnancy and no conception! - Hosea 9:11 NASB

It’s striking to me that the visual of Ephraim’s glory taking flight is coupled with it’s reproductive statistics.

In an article teaser about population decline Bloomberg Business says this:

In 25 countries with more than a million residents, the opposite is true: Their populations are shrinking dramatically—threatening not only economic growth, but national prestige. (Read about it here.)

Interesting that they make the same connection.

In God’s economy, children are a gift—a reward.

Behold, children are a gift of the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one's youth.
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

Psalm 127:3-5 NASB

They are supposed to fly, but as an arrow—shot into life with purpose and direction, not driven off by fear or frustration, or left unborn.

What makes people unwilling to bring children into the world, and into their lives? Selfishness? Fear for the future?

My greatest joy, and deepest pride rises from my kids. (You can see why in the photo above.)

A nation that forsakes it’s children forsakes it’s own help and it’s future.

Ben NelsonThanks for stopping by,

Shine where you’re screwed in.

Hey Ben, What a great photo.
A visiting preacher in our pulpit last year sited some stats that indicated that one of the problems with funding social security is we have aborted enough of our future work force that retirees will outpace workers in the future.
    We have despised our futures.
