A simple thought for today.

In Matthew 3, Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan and God the Father shows up. He has something to say.

and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." - Matthew 3:17 NASB

What happens next? The Spirit of God leads Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." - Matthew 4:3 NASB

The very first words out of satan’s* mouth challenge the very last words out of the Father’s mouth.

Father speaks words over Jesus, intended to reinforce the truth of His identityYou are My Son.

satan’s* first attack slams right into God’s most recent revelation.

And how does Jesus combat this attack?

He says, in effect, God’s word is my life.

The word that came out of the mouth of God was “This is My Son.” You can’t take that from me with your bad logic, satan.

What has Father spoken over you? It’s more true than anything satan brings to your attention. satan* uses flawed logic to make you doubt what God has spoken over your life.

What God has spoken is the food you need to chew on until it becomes the fiber of your being.

Chew on that for a while

the voice of a star

When God wants to reach someone with a message, He uses language they understand. And so it is with these men from the East. I don’t know why the Lord wanted to include them in this incarnation party, the scripture is silent on the Lord’s  motives.

Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. - Matthew 2:2 NASB

Perhaps He wanted to emphasize the fact that Jesus came not only for the Jews, but for the whole world. Some of the traditional tellings of this story has three wisemen from three different nations representing the diverse people groups. But none of that is in the pages of our Bible, so we hold all that loosely.

I like to think that Daniel, during his time in the Babylonian school of seers, left a group of students who were awaiting this King of the Jews for hundreds of years, and because of their faithful watching and waiting, the Lord actually sent them an invitation to the party.

In 2 Chronicles we read

For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. - 2 Chronicles 16:9 NIV

I believe God put this star in the sky because these folks were fully committed to hearing His voice - they were listening!

In any case the Lord makes this announcement to foreigners. Somehow He is speaking in a language they will understand.

When God wants to reach stargazers - guess what - He writes to them in the stars. How cool is that - God knows just how to reach anyone.

That thought right there is worth the price of admission today.

God knows how to reach your loved ones. He speaks their language.

Granted - these wisemen were listening and willing to respond to the call of this star, but know this - if there is any hope for those you care for - it is in God’s amazing ability to communicate across any and all barriers.

That’s why when He looked over the multitudes and saw their lostness and confusion His call to the disciples was:

Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. - Matthew 9:38 NIV

God knows what language your son, your daughter, your mom or dad can understand.

I want to bring this down to two simple points.

God can speak to anyone in a language they can understand.

Do you have someone for whom you care who has not responded to the gospel.

I want to pray into this today. There are two things I want to go after right now.

First, I want us to pray for these folks that God would take their blinders off. I want to pray that their hearts are open to hear from God.

These wise men - when they saw the star - got up and left everything to come and worship Jesus. They had ears to hear.

Grab a piece of paper right now and write down the name God has put on your heart.

Let’s pray that  - Lord give ______________ ears to hear your voice.

Second - I want to pray that God would send laborers into that field who can speak their language.

Lord speak into ______________’s life in a language they understand. Send someone they will listen to.

Ben NelsonWalk in the Light!

I used to work with a man who, when asked a hard question he would reply:

“Only God knows and He’s not talking to me.”

Once in a while I would pop off the curt reply “He talks to me!”

I made light of it now and then, but it’s sad really that some folks never sense the voice of the Lord in their lives. To be perfectly honest, it’s sad how often I am content to go about my life without hearing from the Lord.

Perhaps you wonder how to hear the voice of the Lord.

Perhaps you have never heard Him.

Here is a lesson on how to hear from the Lord.

Step one:

Take your headphones out of your ears

Step two:

Open His Word

Step three:

Ask Him to speak

Step four:

A prayer I often pray when I am not hearing well is found in Psalm 119:

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. - Psalms 119:18 ESV

Try it and let me know what you hear.

Why Red Letters?

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. - John 16:13 NASB

The Spirit had His divine highlighter out this morning as I looked at this passage.

Here is what I saw in my spirit.

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. - John 16:13 NASB

The thing I was thinking is that everything (pronounced EVERYTHING) we receive from God comes through word. The word of God spoken to our heart is the source of all life in us.

Consider the beginning of Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might - Ephesians 1:17-18 NASB

He prays for our capacities to receive the word – that holy seed of the supernatural – as the inheritance promised.

Next consider Peter’s comments on how we partake of the divine nature:

seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. - 2 Peter 1:3-4 NASB

Now – we can’t just hear – we must hear and allow the word to have it’s work in us by obedience.

for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. - Romans 2:13 NASB

But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. - James 1:22 NASB

Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. - Matthew 7:24 NASB

I am just going to let this little string of scriputres speak today – I have said enough. If you skimmed over the scriptures above, please go back and read them with an eye to what the Spirit has for you today.
