Many Waters - SoS header

Today we start with the other maidens questioning our Bride.

What is your beloved
More than another beloved,
O fairest among women?
What is your beloved
More than another beloved,
That you so charge us?

Song of Songs 5:9 NKJV

We have said from the beginning that our Bride, this Shulamite represents the individual passionate believer in Christ. Jesus has other followers, but not all are as single minded as our maiden.

These to whom she has confessed her lovesick state ask her a question. They are confused by her single-hearted devotion to Him. They ask, ‘what makes your lover so special?’

They don’t understand why she would still be holding on to Him. He has been out of communication for a long while. She has suffered at the hands of leadership because of her passion for Him. Why would she hold out for Him and Him alone?

Another Lover

Their turn of phrase indicates a problem with their own relationship with Jesus. They have other ‘beloveds’ – other passions. Their words betray their lack of single heartedness toward the Lord. He is not their one and only love, as He is for the bride. They are willing to hold Him up for comparison, but she has eyes only for Him.

O fairest among women

She has a beauty they cannot attain, and that beauty is in the one thing they lack. Single hearted devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ is the most beautiful character trait. It makes you beautiful to Him, but it does not stop there. Your passion is beautiful to other believers, even in their compromise.

They see you dwelling on the One Thing your heart yearns for, and they are stirred to jealousy. But until the put down their willingness to look back at their other lovers, they will never have your beauty.

Your dove’s eyes make you beautiful for all to see.

So who are these women?

Let’s call them dull believers. They are not the flaming Christians who are going for it every day. There was a time when they approached Christ, but they never turned over the keys to their garden.

You might find them in your church with harsh opinions and criticism, but no hand on the plow.

Next week we will look at ten traits the Bride loves about her Shepherd King.

Until then, keep your eyes on the Lover of your soul, and don’t look for another lover.

See you again soon.

As I mentioned yesterday Jesus said:

All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. - Matthew 11:27

So why is it that you can only know God the Father through Jesus?

An Aside

By the way, let me just say that exclusivity is not inherently evil. I know it is portrayed that way in this generation, but it is not wrong for there to be only one correct answer.

Consider an Island community with one point of access, be it a bridge or a ferry. It may at times be inconvenient, but it is not wrong to say the way to the island is thus and such a highway. It is in fact helpful and instructive to point out such a fact. If I want to have access to this island, this becomes critically important information.

Back to Jesus.

Check out what the writer of Hebrews says:

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, - Hebrews 1:1-3

One of the key reasons God the Father gave us His Son Jesus was to show us Himself. Jesus is the clearest and most precise image of God we will ever receive.

You see Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. He is God’s chosen form of communication. Jesus is God speaking to us in a language we can all grasp. Want to see God? Look at Jesus and you will see God’s priorities, God’s attitudes, God’s heart and mind expressed in action.

Will you follow Him with me today?

Jesus said:

All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. - Matthew 11:27

I have to say, I am glad He said it. If I were to just come out and say, you don’t know God unless you know Jesus in this day of tolerance and relativity, I might be cast off as an extremist.

I am not extreme you see, I just follow Jesus. He is the extreme one. He is the one who keeps throwing down these exclusive statements.

You see, according to Jesus, there is only one road to the Father.

We all know He said it in John 14

I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. - John 14:6

But did you know that right here in Matthew 11, right before some of the most calming and oft quoted statements He ever made, He threw down this same exclusive idea.

He says in no uncertain terms, that He – Jesus is the only one who actually knows God the Father, and the only ones who will ever know the Father are ones who get their knowledge from Jesus.

But Ben, what about the religions that consider Jesus a prophet but not the “only way?”

They need Jesus!

But Ben, what about the faiths that share our scriptures?

Do they know God through Jesus, or through another?

But Ben, what about the Jews? Jesus was a Jew, as were all His disciples!

They need Jesus! Judaism without Christ – the Messiah – is still a religion pointing forward at something that happened in the past.

There is only one who came to Save His people from their sins.

After this exclusive, intolerant statement He makes an offer that we love to talk about:

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30

But you can’t have this promised rest without Jesus.

Will you follow Him with me today?

Come back tomorrow for a bit on the 'WHY' behind this exclusivity.
