April 13, 1742, marked the first public performance of George Fredrick Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah. Handel was not the one to put the words to music. Charles Jennings, a Shakespearean scholar and lover of Handel’s music. Eventually, the two became acquainted and did some projects together.
In July of 1741 Jennings wrote to his friend Edward Holdsworth:
“Handel says he will do nothing next Winter, but I hope I shall perswade him to set another Scripture Collection I have made for him, & perform it for his own Benefit in Passion Week. I hope he will layout his whole Genius & Skill upon it, that the Composition may excell all his former Compositions, as the Subject excells every other Subject. The Subject is Messiah.”
Handel often composed with great speed, and this was no exception. Handel worked on the music for just over three weeks, from August 22nd – September 14th and then moved on to his next project.
To read more about the inception and first performance, check it out here.
My love for Messiah has been brewing for decades. I love the music, but the lyrics have me weeping and cheering each time I hear it. In my high school years, my parents and I would head for Carnegie Hall to hear a full performance. I’ve sung the tenor part in various choir settings.
So much for the prolog. Now for the main attraction. These lyrics are 100% scripture. I’ve included links to each scripture in case you want to dig in and see it in context. Taken together the Old Testament prophecies and New Testament fulfillments are staggering.
Blessings to all.
Merry Christmas!

I love Handel’s music. Thanks for sharing.
I love the music, but the words of scripture as curated here get me every time!
