…they will be called the sons of God. Matthew 5:9
OK – now that is a big promise! Peacemakers will be called the sons of God.
Interesting since the one and only begotten Son of God carries the title Prince of Peace.
This promise raises a couple of questions for me.
First, who is doing the calling? Who calls us the sons of God? I can see three answers.
» Those outside the family may say “these have been with Jesus,” or more likely “you must be one of them.”
» Those inside the family will see the family resemblance, and welcome us in with open arms.
» But the best and most significant one is the Father. He who called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light, now calls us His own sons!
My next question is: What does it mean to be a son of God? Romans 8 does a great job of describing this.
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him. ~ Romans 8:14-17
We call Him “Abba” which is akin to Papa in my understanding.
We share in Christ’s inheritance. And the Word does not imply that we get a share, but rather that we share–Joint heirs! In Christ, we inherit all things. Ephesians 1 tells us we already have every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus. Again in Romans 8:32, we find that He who did not spare His only Son will withhold nothing from us.
It is a big deal to be a son of God! Ponder for a while what it would be like in the natural living as crowned prince of a wealthy nation. What are the privileges and what are the responsibilities? What would it mean to reign as heir to the throne? What, then, does it mean to be a Son of God? What are the privileges and responsibilities?
Thanks for coming by today.
Stay in the BLESSING,
Ben
